Florida Lighthouse Day

Sand, sun, and…lighthouses?

To raise public awareness and support for the preservation of its 30 lighthouses, Florida has proclaimed September 15 as Florida Lighthouse Day.  Lighthouses from all over the state will hold special celebrations of lighthouse history and give gifts and discounted admissions fees, alongside live entertainment and refreshments.

Lighthouse Day provides an opportunity for Florida visitors to tour lighthouses that may not be open to the public at other times.  Visitors to these lighthouses will witness a rich maritime history going back as far as 1824.

Other special events include a brick laying ceremony at Cape St. George Lighthouse to celebrate the rebuilding of this lighthouse after it tumbled into the Gulf of Mexico in 2005.

Fundraiser showcases local talent

Four bands will take the stage at PUBFEST on 8 November, 2007. The concert begins at 8:00pm and continues until 1:00am.  Bartender Pete is the MC of the event.

Pubfest is Medium Weight Forks’ annual fundraiser concert held at The Pub.  Five different bands play a one-hour set.

This year’s line-up is:

8:00pm           Five Defy
9:20pm           The Sharp Five
10:40pm        SkyRider
12:00am        Electric Chair

Between each band there is a twenty minute open mic session.  Bartender Pete keeps the crowd energized and introduces the open mic participants and the bands.

“We look at this concert as a way to showcase local bands, as well as fund our journal,” says event co-ordinator, Joan Johnson.  “It’s a way of paying it forward.”

Medium Weight Forks is Orange University’s annual literary and arts journal.  It features creative works from NWMSU’s undergraduate students.
